BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – Students at Bonita Springs High School are reaching new heights with drones.

BSHS has the only aviation academy in Lee County. Students are able to learn how to pilot drones during school.

Now, their JROTC team just finished first in a district-wide drone competition. Students had to fly the machines through obstacles in a circular course.

Yulissa Garcia-Martinez is the team’s pilot. Two other teammates stand on the other side of the course to give directions to the pilot. Garcia-Martinez said it was tough at first, but they’re getting a lot better.

“It felt like a real life video game and I really like playing video games myself, so doing this is awesome,” Garcia-Martinez said. “We’re not just sitting at home watching tv, we’re actually flying drones.”

The students said this gives them an experience to help them in the future. Learning a skill like this now prepares them to potentially further their learning in college or a job.

“I want to do more. It opens a lot of opportunities for me in the future,” Garcia-Martinez said.

The district will add more obstacles for the events next year.

There is more to being a drone pilot than just buying a machine and flying in your backyard. It can be that simple, but most of us will need to understand some drone laws before we try to take to the sky.
