The expiry on 30 September of a root certificate, IdentTrust DST Root CA X3, belonging to the provider Let’s Encrypt has led to some big websites facing problems verifying certificates.

Let’s Encrypt is a non-profit and one of the bigger providers of HTTPS certificates.

Apps like Shopify and Slack experienced outages and were unable to connect to remote systems.

Scott Helme, the founder of Security Headers, was alert to the impending issue, warning that “a few things will probably break on that day”.

In a blog post, Helme explained the issue in detail, saying that the root CA had expired, browsers would not trust certificates issued by the CA in question.

“This will not be the first time a root CA certificate has expired and I imagine it will follow the same trend as previous expirations where things break,” he wrote.

“If the root certificate that your certificate chain anchors on is expired then there’s a good chance it’s going to cause things to fail.”

Helme told the American site ZDNet that Palo Alto, Bluecoat, Cisco Umbrella, Google Cloud Monitoring, Auth0, Shopify, QuickBooks, and Fortinet were among those who had faced issues.

In a tweet, Let’s Encrypt said: “Our cross-signed DST Root CA X3 expired today. If you are hitting an error, check out fixes in our community forum.

“We’re seeing higher than normal renewals, so you may experience a slowdown in getting your certificates.”

There is more to being a drone pilot than just buying a machine and flying in your backyard. It can be that simple, but most of us will need to understand some drone laws before we try to take to the sky.
