Britain could deploy a new fleet of drones to conduct strikes in Afghanistan if the Taliban does not deal with the terrorist threat in the country, the defence secretary has said.

Ben Wallace said the number of potential terrorists was likely to have grown in the 20 years since the 9/11 attacks and that if the Taliban moved away from its commitments and hosted terrorists then the threat emanating from the country could rise.

Wallace was on a visit to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, where a new fleet of Protector drones, able to operate in civilian airspace, will be based from 2023. He said: “I’ll do whatever I have to do to protect Britain’s citizens’ lives and our interests and our allies’ when we are
